Malcolm stared at his wife, amazed by the calm in her face. Damp stained the black gauze and champagne satin of her skirts. Dear God, all the months of waiting, wondering, choosing nursery furnishings, and this was really happening. Not unlike the moment shots had finally rung out across the field of Waterloo. Save that that moment had quite lacked the wonder that filled him now.

“Sweetheart—” He reached for Suzanne.

“I’m all right.” Her hand went to her stomach and she drew a short breath. “We have time.”

“Second babies can come a lot faster.” Cordelia was on her feet and moved to Suzanne’s side.

“I’ll send for Geoffrey Blackwell.” Malcolm moved to the library door and flung it open. “Valentin!”
